What is Man ?

“When I see your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and stars that you set in place What is man that you are mindful of him, and a son of man that you care for him?
Yet you have made him little less than a god, crowned him with glory and honor.” (Psalm 8:4-6)

Looking around the world it is easy to see that men have seemed to have forgotten what it means to be men. Ladies, don’t leave, because as most ladies will not only eventually become mothers or at least a mother figure at some point or other, and this may be reference material.

This is not going to be a post about lady-bashing, or men-bashing, or any of those things. Primarily, this is a point aimed primarily towards younger and mature men, who might have lost their path, or possibly those who never really had someone to point them along the way.

First, men tend to be logically oriented thinkers, . Men want to understand how things work, why they work the way they do, and to develop a working knowledge of life in general.

God created you, to know Him, to love Him and to serve Him, so that you can be with Him in Heaven. It really is that simple. You should never have to go through life asking yourself the question “Why am I here ?”. You have the answer. The rest is “filler”.

In this Psalm, there is a questioning. What is man, that God , the creator of the universe, should take the time to care even a little bit about mortal man ? God created us, came and lived among us, and gave us a path of salvation and free will all because He loves us.

OK , you say, but this applies to ladies as well. You are right ! So what is it, that we should take on as good, righteous, faithful, christian men ? Good question. Lets start with our faith ! Why ? Because it is through the study of our faith that we will learn all these things. When we look at the lives of the saints we can see real men. Men of faith…. Men of character… men of strength… And men of conviction.

Saint Joseph, who was the model of men. Imagine the things he must have gone through, and look at the strength of his conviction and faith !

You want to know what makes someone a man ? Lets consider some of these characteristics.
Real men … love God. They take on the mantle of faith, and all of the things that this means.
It means that you are involved in a life long process of seeking God. You ask the tough questions. You keep asking those questions until you are satisfied with the answer, and then start asking the next tough question. You ask God. You ask yourself, and you ask others who are wiser and more experienced than you.

Real men are humble. Your strength does not come from you. Your strength comes from God. Your physical strength, your emotional strength, your understanding are gifts. Those gifts are not yours, they are given to you for the betterment and service to others. Don’t waist the gifts !

Real men understand that they are given work as a gift, and they have a responsibility to take on the labor of work not only for their own benefit, but for the benefit of others. No matter what job you do, no matter what position you occupy, no matter if you work under the supervision of another or you perform work directed by another person, you do not labor alone, and you do not labor for yourself.
Your work is there for your own development and to give you the opportunity to serve God through others. Do not waste that gift.

Real men, understand, that in order to be complete in a relationship with another, they first need to complete in their relationship with God. Not that we are ever truly complete in our relationship with God, but that we work diligently at that relationship. Within that relationship we understand we are not the center of the universe, but that we come third. God is first, our brothers and sisters second, and then us.

Real men seek to be honorable, not the praise and vanity that comes from the recognition of others, but rather the honor that comes from seeking a faith filled and righteously lived life.

Real men understand, and protect the sanctity of women. Not because they are lacking in some way, but instead because it is women who are those who carry us, who nurture us, who teach us, and who love us . It is women who were our first teachers after God.

Real men understand that some of the concepts of chivalry are not for the benefit of women, but rather for our own benefit. Women can open their own doors, and do not NEED us to do that. Women do not NEED a man to make their way in the world any longer.

Real men understand that a faith-filled godly woman is a blessing and a gift to us, and to the world. In the same way that a faith-filled godly man is a blessing to the world.

A real man, loves God, his family, his brothers and sisters, and all of creation in a way that causes him to work diligently for their benefit, to help them , and by serving others, himself on the road to salvation.

May God give you the gift of His peace !

Brother, you truly understand our Secular Rule of Life that our Holy Father Pope VI gave us not to long ago, (1978), “By living the grace of matrimony, husbands and wives in particular should bear witness in the world to the love of Christ for the Church.” (Chapter 11:27).
