Choose This Day Whom You Will Serve….

” …Choose today whom you will serve, … As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” ( Joshua 24:15)
In this scripture, Joshua is addressing all of Isreal.  All of the tribes.. and Joshua has decided its time to “get down to brass tacks”.  The time had come for Isreal who had gone a bit astray from God.. who was busy worshipping idols,.. Who had gone off the path God had set before them.  It seems they needed a little reminder of all the things God had done for them..

This was again, a retelling of the stories that had occured in previous generations.. The great Oral tradition of the church.

Indeed today this is one of the reasons why it is that we read scripture of all of the Bible at Mass, because we NEED, the oral tradition, we need to hear the Word of God speaking to us through the Gospels, we need to be reminded of what it is that God has done for us.

There is a great deal of aversion today, to the old traditions of the Church.  There is a reason we have these traditions..
Think about this.. while you were a child you would have Grannie over for Christmas and every year she would make her famous Egg Nog.   You had that egg nog every single year for your whole life and then one day.. Grannie does not come.  It doesnt feel right.
Maybe Grannie went to be with the Lord and someone in the family decides after a year or so that they will pick up the tradition and they make the egg nog from Grannies recipe.  What happens ?  You remember, you think about Grannie.  You tell stories and remember her.. and you say a prayer for her.
Joshua is tired.. he has come to the end of his life.. Joshua is 110 years old.. which during any time period is old.  Particularly during that time period.  Its time for Isreal to step up. To make a choice and stick with it.

This is what happens when we examine our lives, or maybe someone looks at what we are doing and decides to have one of those heart to heart talks about where you are in your life, where you stand with God.

At some point in their lives, everyone comes to that point.  Traditionally this day happens when we, being the hard headed sort we are… is generally not a good day/week/month/year.
So it’s come to this…  Its time to make some choices.

But the problem is some people think that this is a once in a life time event.  You make the choice and thats it… but it’s not.
This is a moving target.  Granted, you decide that You will serve God. That Jesus Christ is Lord, and all mankind are your brothers and sisters.  BUT, then comes the work.   EVERY DAY we are faced with situations that cause us to make the choices in line with our faith.  It is every day that we choose to do those things that are right, and just, and faithful to God.

We decide, we fail, we get up, and we do it all over again promising to do better, to be better than we were.

This is where we get down to brass tacks.. we can not blindly go about a life of faith.  We need to ask questions, we need to get the answers, we need to keep asking those questions until we learn and know in our hearts what we believe and why we believe those things.

Then we need to make the hard choices, and make those hard choices in line with the faith we hold.

You can no long afford to say that you did not know.. and did nothing to find out.

If you are a Catholic, then you need to learn your faith, and then stand on the truths that the church holds.  Its as simple as that.

So choose… Choose to learn your faith.. CHoose to live your faith… choose to be the person that God has in mind for you to be.
Choose today whom you will serve.. as for me and my house, we will serve THE LORD.
May God give you the gift of His peace.
