Lost in Wonder..

“Godhead here in hiding, whom I do adore

Masked by these bare shadows, shape and nothing more,

See, Lord, at thy service low lies here a heart

Lost, all in wonder at the God thou art.

Seeing , touching, tasting are in thee deceived;

How says trusty hearing ? that shall be believed;

What God’s Son has told me, take for truth I do;

Truth himself speaks truly or there’s nothing true ”

(Adoro Te Devote – St Thomas Aquinas – CCC pg 348 )

The true presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, in the sacrament, in the tabernacle  is one of the cherished parts of our faith.  However, There are still those who, because of a lack of catechesis, or being lead astray do not understand the true and real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.

There is overwhelming scriptural evidence that shows the real presence that begins at institution of the Last supper.  3 of the 4 Gospels all record the words of institution of the Last Supper in exactly the same way.  When Jesus was preparing to enter into the Passion,  He said ” This IS  my body which will be given up for you” and ” This cup which is poured out for you is the New Covenant in my blood”  (Luke 22:19-20  emphasis added by me).

Jesus speaking to the Jewish rabbis and elders told them,

” Unless you eat the flesh of the son of man and drink his blood, you do not have life in you.” “My flesh is real food, my blood is real drink.” When some of his disciples complained, “This is a hard saying; who can accept it?”, he didn’t explain that he had not been speaking literally in saying he would give his body to eat and his blood to drink. Instead he let them go.”

Further,  In John 6:51  – ” I am the living bread which has come down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I give is my flesh for the life of the world. ”    finally, ” Who ever eats my flesh and drinks my blood will have everlasting life and I will raise him up on the last day.”

There are several other passages as well as teaching from the early church fathers who all testify to the real presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.

So now consider, what is in your own heart.  What your faith and your conscience informs you of.  If you have questions, go and talk to your parish priest, or any priest, deacon or religious who can help you answer these questions.  Do not allow apprehension or fear of appearing unknowledgable stop you from getting these answers.

The next time you go to Holy Mass before Mass begins consider why you are there.  Remember you are entering Gods House.  It is a Holy place.

You are in the presence of the All Mighty God, creator of the universe, the heavens and the earth.  Consider Him, and His vastness, His Majesty.  God, who is everywhere and everything, For our sakes deigns to place Himself in the tabernacle.  Through the person of the celebrant, He gives us the immeasurable gift of Himself.

How is it that you receive Him ?  How do you receive this most precious and Holy gift ?    Do you kneel ?  or even bow at all ?   Are you critical of those who do so ?    Should you kneel ?  OF COURSE !   You are in the presence of God !  Receive Him with an open heart, reverently, with an understanding of what it is that you are doing, and take the time to thank Him for His most glorious gift.

We adore you
Most Holy Lord Jesus Christ
Here and in all your churches
Throughout the world,
And we bless you because
By your holy Cross you have redeemed the world.
